Je stelt: 'Door deze transformatie verhoogt de maximumwaarde van de boxplot investeringen. De minimumwaarde blijft gelijk. Ook zijn de outliers verdwenen, waardoor hun invloed ook veel kleiner is. ... de spreiding van de datareeks is groter geworden ... '

De maximumwaarde verhoogt niet echt. Door de transformatie worden de grootste waarden veel kleiner, waardoor de grootste schommelingen worden afgezwakt. De kleine schommelingen worden dus relatief vergroot. Maw, de outliers zullen zich dichter bij de andere data bevinden waardoor ze niet langer als outlier aanschouwd worden.

Door logaritmen te gebruiken zorgen we ervoor dat:
- Grote getallen kleiner worden
- Grote schommelingen worden afgevlakt
- Kleine schommelingen groter worden
- Outliers/extreme waarden dichter naar het gemiddelde komen
- De spreiding kleiner wordt

De student heeft de vraag gedeeltelijk correct beantwoord.

Door de verandering gaan we ervoor zorgen dat grote getallen veel kleiner worden zodat grote schommelingen worden afgezwakt en kleinere schommelinge relatief groter worden. Door deze verandering schuiven de outliers dichter naar het gemiddelde waardoor deze geen echte outliers meer zijn (op de grafiek zien we de twee uiterste outliers niet meer). In tegenstelling tot wat de student zegt gaan we hierdoor de spreiding verkleinen en niet vergroten.
